Desert Garden UCC has been involved in a Spiritual Discernment Process asking, “Is God calling Desert Garden to declare itself an Open and Affirming Congregation?” They began with an introduction by the ONA Core Team in January. The Core Team invited The Rev. Dr. Deborah Krause, President of Eden Seminary, who preached and taught on the subject. The Core Team showed several films which are available in the library. This past summer they invited eleven people to share part of their story with the church. On Nov 9th, Wallace Hudson from One n Ten will speak on a variety of issues including the importance of pronouns.

The United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) were among 27 Christian churches and agencies to address a letter to members of Congress.  The letter, in the context of the ongoing war in Israel/Palestine, urged Congress to:

• Publicly call for ceasefire, de-escalation and restraint by all sides

• Prioritize steps to secure immediate release of hostages and ensure international protection for civilians

• Call on all parties to abide by the laws of war, including the Geneva conventions and customary international law

A group of folks from The Good Shepherd in Sahuarita are teaching an English class at La Casa de la Misericordia, a UCC supported refugee shelter, in Nogales, MX on Fridays.  Their format is to provide a lesson to the entire group (sometimes as many as 50 participants) and then break into small groups for more practice. They would welcome some additional people to help with the small groups. Lessons and materials are provided. Tucson folks take note! The commitment need not be every Friday. Even once a month would be helpful. It is rewarding and fun! Some Spanish knowledge is helpful, but probably not essential! The experience is energizing, upbeat, and fun! Transportation is provided. They leave Green Valley at 9:40 and get back around 1:30. Interested? Please contact Sue Palfrey: stpalfrey@gmail.com or 520-909-4693.
