Southwest Conference an amicus brief participant in Nov. 12 Supreme Court DACA case

Our amicus brief was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court on October 4, challenging the administration’s rescission of DACA. Read the brief here. 127 religious organizations signed onto this brief to protect hundreds of thousands of Dreamers across the nation!

“As detailed in the brief, joining this effort is an extension of the amazing work all of you do every day to promote compassion and justice.  Thank you so much for lending your voices to the brief.  We’re very grateful to be able to provide the Supreme Court your perspectives, and we very much appreciate your valuable support.

“The oral argument for this case is set for Tuesday, November 12 (some of you have told me that you will be on the steps of the Supreme Court on that day to show your support!).  The Supreme Court will then decide the case in the months following the argument.  We will be sure to keep you posted on case developments.” – Amir Badat, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP

If the Supreme Court supports the administration’s decision to end DACA, hundreds of thousands of people who are Americans in every way but their status would lose the right to work and live without fear, and ultimately be vulnerable to deportation. We cannot let this happen. We must use our voices to protect our community.

Immigrant youth and activists across the country took their fight to the highest court in the land, and on November 12, 2019, the US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the legality of the administration’s decision to terminate DACA.

As the Southwest Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) we are proud of our progressive view of the Gospel and our mission statement, “extravagantly welcoming and affirming followers of Christ called to embody God’s unconditional justice and love” is manifested in the ways we live out every day.

The United States government for thirty years has failed to address immigration reform by enacting legislation to protect families and those fleeing persecution and poverty, and the federal government recently has stepped up detention and deportation of ordinary people—not dangerous criminals—resulting in cruel injustice, extreme hardship, and family separation. We have therefore called upon the covenant partners of the Southwest Conference to prayerfully organize, advocate, act prophetically, preach and teach about immigration justice, including local, state and national legislation. Signing on to this amicus brief reflects that call to action.

Please offer prayers for DACA this week. Sign up so we can lift up your prayers and work at weekly services, vigils, press conferences, social media, op-eds, or calling your congressperson.
