Help for Asylum Seekers

from Scottsdale Congregational UCC’s newsletter

The coalition led by Lutheran Social Services is still collecting clothing and meds for asylum seekers being dropped off by ICE with no resources.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement asked Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, through support from Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS), to coordinate local Phoenix efforts that are already being taken, and that is what they are doing.

People from the coalition are here at SCUCC from 3:00 – 6:00 PM each Thursday to receive the donated items. Also, if you prefer, you can drop off your items in room #1 (the nursery) in the Smallsreed Building during Sacred Grounds. The coalition comes back on Friday morning to sort the items and get them delivered to where they are needed.

They are still trying to increase the number of faith communities that can help. Some of our folks attended the first information meeting that was held on March 12th. If you are interested in attending the next informational opportunity on March 28th, here is the information you need. Please use the link below to register, but also let Pastor Carol know so that she can coordinate SCUCC’s response.

From Lutheran Social Services:

We are putting out the call to our Maricopa County congregational partners to consider if you can help. There will be two critical roles:

  • Host sites: that house migrant families that have been released from detention short term (1-3 days)

  • Supply and support sites: that provide material, volunteer, and financial support to host sites

Being part of the LSS-SW network means that staff will be available to help with case management, volunteer facilitation, media requests, and needs assistance.

We will be hosting 2 informational sessions where you can get a more in-depth understanding of these roles. There is an urgent need to find host sites immediately. Please contact us directly if you are ready to get started before the informational session on Thursday, March 28: 11:15 – 1:15 at Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, 2502 E. University Drive, Suite 125, Phoenix, AZ 85034

Please RSVP here

Thank you for your prayerful consideration.
