JPANet: Congress MUST pass protections for vulnerable populations NOW!

Addressing both the need to stem the tide of the COVID-19 pandemic and also the economic repercussions, Congress must continue to act urgently, keeping in mind the needs of the most vulnerable among us. The passage of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which included emergency paid sick leave, nutrition assistance funding and unemployment insurance funding is a good start, but much more must be done.

We are mindful of individuals experiencing homelessness, including many older adults, with little access to sanitation. Not only does the stress of living outdoors depress immunity, but poor nutrition, lack of running water and toilets can significantly increase risk of illness.

We are mindful of people with disabilities, who are often the most at risk from the virus due to chronic health issues. Direct support professionals who help people with disabilities live independently are a vital resource, and we must ensure support professionals have the adequate resources they need so that people with disabilities can continue to thrive.

As Congress moves forward with more legislation we ask that they be especially mindful of these folks as well.

As people of faith, we believe in the moral call to care for those in need. In the midst of a global pandemic, it is critical that our elected officials place the wellbeing of people over that of corporations, and that the first priority of Congress is to make sure that everyone has access to the resources they need for their health and wholeness. We urge Congress to include in upcoming legislation these important priorities:

  • Increases in health care funding for states so they can adequately respond, and coverage of all state Medicaid costs.

  • Ensuring access and affordable treatment for the virus regardless of income, location, disability, or immigration status.

  • Increases in homelessness assistance funding to quickly get people into affordable homes

  • Ensuring low-income workers and individuals facing hardship have the assistance they need to access nutritious food and provide for their families.

  • Provide targeted rebate checks directed at low- and moderate-income individuals to most effectively boost the economy.

Urgent action is needed. Please join us in contacting your member of Congress, to call for action prioritizing those most at risk.
