Church Jottings 1/19/19

Reminder: Prayer for Christian Unity Service, as a part of the World Council of Churches Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, will be held at Shepherd of the Hills UCC on Wed, Jan 23rd at 7 PM.

Encanto will celebrate its 75th Anniversary on January 27th. A capital campaign hoping to raise $55,000 is underway to cover the cost of building maintenance and upgrades. Almost a third of the way there!

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national grassroots movement which allows young people to participate in justice work to help local people in food crisis. 100% of the funds and non-perishable food collected by Casas Adobes youth this year will go to benefit Interfaith Community Services (ICS) and Youth On Their Own (YOTO). You are also invited to the “kick off” celebration waffle brunch during coffee hour: enjoy waffles and your favorite toppings!

Souper Bowl of Caring is observed at many of our churches. Let us know how YOUR church staged the event and the results.

A dozen volunteers from Casas Adobes Congregational Church arrived at the crack of dawn on the far south side of Tucson on Wednesday to caulk, paint and add trim to the closets and bathrooms of one of the homes being constructed by Habitat for Humanity. At the very end of a very long morning, Eileen Spear showed up with what must have been a four-foot-long sub from Subway that the crew eagerly devoured for lunch. It served as a well-deserved reward for all their hard work.

We have all said that our own church library is a project waiting to happen. Well, at First Congregational in Albuquerque, it's happening! The church library is being reorganized and simplified. The process will take several months to complete. A digitalized list of all books in the library will be available for members and friends of the church to use when the project is finished. New books will be added periodically as needed. Hats off to you!

The Good Shepherd's (Sahuarita) Friday Night Environmental Movie Series returns on January 25 with a light dinner of pizza followed by the film “A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet”.  Join the Mission, Service and Justice Team and Earthwise for a 5:30pm dinner followed by this powerful film at 6:15pm.

Congratulations to the Black Mountain Trivia Team that won third place in the Team Trivia contest at Tailgaters, Il Primo, Cave Creek on Tuesday, January 15th! The team of Cindy Keck, Lissi Weiss, Karen Friese, Jacklyn Adams, Jack Adams, Dick Friese, and Doug Weiss was hosted by Sherry and Scott Kriegshauser. Sherry and Scott offered a Team Trivia experience in the Time Talent auction and raised $210 for Black Mountain UCC.

Scottsdale UCC shares the news that two of their homeless homeless friends have secured an apartment rental in Mesa as of February 1. The husband has been working full time for the past several months. The church now wants to help them get settled into their new home by providing furniture and supplies. If you think you have items that could help, please contact Donna Gentry at Raydongen@cox.net

Church of the Beatitudes sponsors a new kind of book club: One Book, One Church. The whole church reads the same book and forms several small groups to discuss. This spring the book is "What Does a Progressive Christian Believe?" By Delwin Brown.

Church of the Beatitudes is collecting empty shoe boxes for the Humane Society. The boxes are used for kittens at the facility to create a safe, homey space during their stay.

Church of the Red Rocks is headed on a mission trip to Guatemala in the spring. They are collecting lots of Hershey bars to hand out to the children and asking church members to drop supplies in the church office. Ministry by Chocolate....my kind of missionaries!
