IN THE TIME OF COVID: Singing in a Strange Land

Next Saturday, January 16, the United Church of Santa Fe, with Albuquerque's Coro Lux, offers a nation-wide virtual event, "In a time of Covid: Singing in a Strange Land," focused on the power and witness of African American singing traditions.

The text and music of African American Spirituals and Gospel Music--avowed favorites of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.--speak to the hearts of those yearning for change throughout the ages. Their historical meanings, as well as how they can help us persevere today, will be at the center of our time together on Saturday January 16th.

We invite you to take time to sing these songs with others across the country, as we are led by the incomparable Dr. Rollo Dilworth in examining, understanding, and singing Spirituals that cry out, heal, and call for action. Dr. Dilworth is joined by Dr. James Abbington (Emory University, Candler School of Theology), renowned scholar and church musician, who will provide context for the singing of Spirituals in this strange time.

Hosted by nationally-recognized composer/conductor Bradley Ellingboe (CoroLux ABQ) and the Rev. Talitha Arnold (United Church of Santa Fe, National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention), this immersive day-long event will bring attendees into the music and mindset of MLK Day, as well as closer to each other in song. A vocal health workshop by Dr. Stevie Springer and physical health updates in the time of COVID from Dr. Joe Alcorn complete the day’s emphasis on Mental & Spiritual Health and Well-Being.

The virtual format for this event invites attendees from all over the country to experience the power and community of music from the comfort of their own homes. Join us!
