We concluded our summer series on banned books and have turned our attention to the building blocks of community. Sermons have touched on things like resilience, compassion, tradition and inclusivity. Our Advent themes will move from building the community to caring for each other, working with the overarching theme of healing and renewal.
Our Justice & Witness Committee participated in a press conference related to Prop 308. The “Yes to Prop 308” group is doing a great job raising awareness re what its passage would entail: in-state tuition for all graduates of AZ high schools (including dreamers!). Rev. Rich Doerrer-Peacock helped organize a follow-up educational event at the church and we had a Dreamer come speak on October 2nd.
Another awesome recent event was the “Why Pronouns are Important” adult education session facilitated by our Community and World Committee. Many thanks to Rev. Dr. Corey Meier, Dr. Ellen Colangelo and last but not least (as Gary birthed the idea), Gary Gephardt. The educational workshop, which we hope to offer again and/or take on the road helped participants become more sensitive, informed and comfortable with the range of pronouns people prefer. We don’t always get it right, of course, but by talking about it and practicing and learning we’re helping to make Desert Palm a safe and supportive place.
Pastor Tom is also offering an Anti-Racism storytelling group. The group is designed to help folks reflect on some of those early experiences around race, noting what messages we received and how they have shaped our attitudes, beliefs and identities.
