Purpose:
The purpose of the position of Director of Music is to promote spiritual life through music in an open and affirming Progressive Christian church.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Music will provide motivation, inspiration, and guidance for all music participants of varied skill levels and proactively work to increase engagement for all who seek to participate in the music ministry of Church of the Beatitudes.
The Director of Music will report directly to and be supervised by the senior minister and will participate in weekly staff meetings.
The Director of Music will coordinate the planning and implementation of appropriate worship music for Sunday, seasonal (e.g., Christmas, Lent), and special services in collaboration with the senior minister.
The Director of Music will possess a passion for music of all kinds and an interest in developing, sustaining, and administering a strong, healthy church music program for all ages. S/he will lead worship that may blend traditional, classical, and contemporary musical styles in a way that appeals to a wide variety of congregants. The Director of Music will be able to produce and direct special events, musicals, and programs. Experience with technical aspects of worship—sound boards, audio equipment, video editing—is a plus.
The Director of Music will be responsible for the leadership and supervision of musical groups of the Church: The Sanctuary Choir, and the Handbell Choir. In addition to directing each group, s/he will rehearse weekly or as necessary with each. It is anticipated that the Director of Music will be committed to Church of the Beatitudes 15-20 hours per week.
The Director of Music will hire and manage contract soloists and accompanists, maintain the music library, and take responsibility for the purchase of all music and music supplies within the music budget.
Qualifications:
Possess at minimum a bachelor’s degree in music
Have experience as a choral conductor with demonstrated skill in choir training (varied ages and abilities)
Show willingness to explore different forms of music for use in worship and improvisation.
Possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities with strong emphasis on listening and problem solving
Prefer proficiency in piano
