On Monday, February 10, 2025, 200 advocates from 29 legislative districts across Arizona gathered at the State Capitol for Lutheran Day at the Legislature—a day dedicated to faith-driven advocacy. Participants met with over 40 lawmakers to build relationships and speak out on critical policy issues.  Speakers included Senate President Warren Petersen (R, LD14), House Minority Leader Oscar De los Santos (D, LD11), Rev. Rock Fremont from Shepherd of the Hills UCC, and Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest CEO Connie Phillips. Their remarks highlighted the essential role that people of faith play as nonpartisan advocates for justice and fairness for all God’s people.

Congregational Guidance for a Time Without Precedent

Rev. Dr. Jim Antal reflects on the critical role congregations can play in climate action at such a time as this.

Rev. Dr. Jim Antal serves as Special Advisor on Climate Justice to the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. Antal’s 2023 book, Climate Church, Climate World (Revised and Updated), is being read by hundreds of churches. From 2006-2018, Antal led the 350 UCC churches in Massachusetts as their Conference Minister and President. He has preached on climate change since 1988 in over 400 settings and has engaged in non-violent civil disobedience on numerous occasions.

First Congregational in Albuquerque was thrilled to have our Conference Minister Rev. Dr. Toni Hawkins with them to preach last week. In her sermon she uplifted the history of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black female unit in World War II. During Black History Month, seek out the film that tells their story, “The Six Triple Eight” which is available on Netflix. First Congregational is continuing their Black History Month Celebration with guest preachers and special displays. Next week’s preacher, Rev Ryan Tate, will also have recital later that afternoon.

And to be part of a prayerful movement that welcomes people is to resist the isolation that forces of oppression depend on.
