Understanding Clergy, Conference, and Covenant Agreements

From the desk of the ACM, Rev. Dr. Derrick Elliott:

In our churches and Conference within the United Church of Christ, covenant agreements are more than just formalities; they are sacred bonds that define relationships among clergy, congregations, and the broader Conference. These agreements are grounded in mutual trust, respect, and a shared commitment to ministry. By establishing a covenant, we affirm how we will support one another—within our local churches and through the larger community of faith represented by the Conference.

For clergy and congregations, covenant agreements outline the expectations and responsibilities that allow us to walk together in service to God. They detail pastoral roles, worship leadership, educational responsibilities, times for rest and renewal, and, most importantly, the ways we will care for each other’s spiritual and emotional well-being. The Conference plays a vital role by providing support and accountability, helping clergy and congregations uphold these commitments and navigate challenges.

Through these covenant relationships, we stay connected to a broader community that strengthens our ministry and ensures we remain faithful to our calling. As we honor these agreements, we grow in unity, deepen our purpose, and create a supportive environment where both church members and clergy can flourish. Let us continue to hold each other—clergies, churches, and our Conference partners—in prayer as we live out these sacred commitments together.
