From the desk of the ACM, Rev. Dr. Derrick Elliott:
When I started my journey to becoming an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, the Southwest Conference (SWC) was in the midst of transitioning from the old Manual on Ministry to the updated version we use today. I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of change! I liked the way things were and found comfort in the familiar. I vividly remember the late David Huisjen handing me a massive binder and saying, "This will guide you on your journey." At the time, I was overwhelmed by the scope of it all, yet with the guidance of Rev. Daivd Buss, I trusted the process. Little did I know, this updated manual would reshape how countless others understand and live out ministry.
The Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers, central to the revised manual, have become an invaluable compass for those called to lead in the UCC. They provide a rich and dynamic framework for evaluating, shaping, and inspiring ministry. Whether you’re exploring a call to ministry, serving as a minister, or simply curious about what makes ministry impactful, the Marks offer a powerful vision for faithful leadership in our ever-changing world.
What Are the Marks?
The Marks are a set of competencies and attributes designed to cultivate leaders who can effectively serve God, the Church, and the world. Far more than a checklist, they reflect the depth and breadth of what it means to be a minister in the UCC.
Organized into eight categories, the Marks highlight the qualities and skills necessary for transformational ministry:
Exhibiting a Spiritual Foundation and Ongoing Spiritual Practices
A deep and abiding relationship with God is the cornerstone of ministry. Ministers are called to nurture their spiritual lives through prayer, discipleship, and faithful stewardship.Nurturing UCC Identity
Embracing the UCC’s core values—extravagant welcome, continuing testament, and changing lives—is essential. Ministers are called to foster unity in Christ and embody the denomination's rich history, theology, and mission.Building Transformational Leadership Skills
Ministers inspire congregations to respond to God’s call with boldness and creativity. This includes fostering collaboration, navigating change, and performing essential administrative tasks with integrity.Engaging Sacred Stories and Traditions
Effective ministry brings Scripture and tradition to life, engaging people of all ages in worship, proclamation, and spiritual formation.Caring for All Creation
Ministers care for individuals, communities, and creation itself, offering hope and healing while practicing self-care and promoting mental wellness.Participating in Theological Praxis
Ministry is rooted in theology that informs and transforms. Ministers integrate theological reflection into their teaching, preaching, and community engagement.Working Together for Justice and Mercy
Inspired by Christ’s radical hospitality, ministers confront injustice, embrace diversity, and build bridges of reconciliation and trust.Strengthening Inter- and Intra-Personal Assets
Ministers cultivate self-awareness, integrity, and strong communication skills while respecting the dignity of all people and fostering healthy relationships.
Why Do the Marks Matter?
The Marks remind us that ministry is both a calling and a craft. They encourage ministers to continually grow, ensuring their work remains faithful to God’s mission and responsive to the needs of a changing world. By focusing on the Marks, ministers are equipped to lead with courage, compassion, and creativity.
How Are the Marks Used?
For Ministers: They serve as a guide for personal growth and professional development, encouraging a lifelong commitment to learning and service.
For Local Churches: The Marks help congregations identify and support leaders who align with UCC values and inspire faithful living.
For Committees on Ministry: The Marks provide a standard for evaluating and supporting ministers, ensuring excellence in leadership across the denomination.
A Vision for the Future
As I reflect on my journey, I see how the Marks have shaped me into the minister I am today. They remind me that ministry is a dynamic and transformative calling, one that requires both faithfulness to God and responsiveness to the needs of the world.
For all of us—whether ministers, church members, or seekers—the Marks challenge us to live out our faith with boldness and grace. Together, we are called to embody Christ’s love, proclaim the Gospel, and work for justice and peace in a world that so desperately needs it. Let the Marks inspire you to deepen your faith, nurture your gifts, and engage in God’s mission with renewed passion. So let us press forward, trusting in the Spirit to guide us every step of the way.
