Over three weeks ago, the House passed the Justice in Policing Act. This legislation makes long-overdue changes to our criminal justice system by mandating the use of proven de-escalation techniques, increasing transparency and accountability, and transforming the culture and mindset of policing in America.
Now it is time for the Senate to take up and pass this bill, so that real systemic change can move forward. You can play a part in making that happen by visiting JusticeInPolicing.us to learn about the details of the bill, share your thoughts, and become a citizen cosponsor. Your comments will be shared with Members of Congress and the public and may be read on the House Floor.
The issue of police brutality is of particular concern in Arizona. In 2019, Arizona experienced the third highest rate of police shootings in the United States, and there was a 700% increase in police killings between 2014 and 2018. The recent killings of Dion Johnson and others in the Phoenix area are tragic reminders that independent investigations, de-escalation techniques, and other police accountability provisions can be life-or-death matters for our neighbors and community members. These requirements, and much more, are included in the Justice in Policing Act.
Join us in pressuring the Senate and Administration to act. Every voice that speaks out on this issue adds strength and urgency to the movement. We will not relent in this fight to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every Arizonan and American.
