ACT NOW: Tell Congress to Pass Meaningful COVID Relief Legislation
Right now the Senate is negotiating the next COVID relief package, and it will likely be the last one this year. Despite months of inaction, they are once again taking it to the wire, and playing with peoples lives. Incredibly, they have offered proposals that significantly decrease the services available to those who have been impacted by the COVID crisis. The recovery measures put in place in the first few pieces of COVID legislation were life support for many vulnerable communities, and now it is being taken away. We must take urgent action by telling Senators to shore up our safety net programs.
This means a robust boost for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit program, expansion of the $600 unemployment insurance supplement, more direct payment assistance, an expansion of eviction protections and rental assistance, and significant support for state and local governments to do everything from increase testing and treatment to ensuring that teachers and students stay safe. It cannot be emphasized enough how vital it is that Congress pass legislation that includes robust COVID-19 relief. Already hunger, homelessness and unemployment are at historic highs and without sustained support for communities even more vulnerable people will be affected.
It is time for us, as people of faith, to once again share with Congress the need for taking meaningful action. That we see our siblings and families on the very brink, and a serious and sustained recovery effort must be made to carry people to not just the end of the public health crisis, but also the economic one. Please join us in letting Congress know we expect them to pass legislation that does more than help corporations and protect businesses, they need to pass legislation that helps people stay in their homes, feed their families and weather this storm.
