Over the past several months the Build Back Better bill has been moving through Congress. Its passage represents a generational investment that reorients our economy and society in ways that will help people thrive. As people of faith, who meet people on the margins and journey with them, we know acutely the needs of our communities.
Unbelievably, Congress has dithered on the bill, not recognizing or acting with the urgency this situation demands. There are arguments about cost and beneficiaries, about actual needs and “hand-outs.” This must end. The provisions of the Build Back Better bill address so many of the urgent issues facing our country; including climate change, housing assistance, childcare and paid leave. It would extend the Child Tax Credit, which if allowed to lapse at the end of this year, would result in many families once again struggling to afford things like food and basic essentials. It includes provisions to provide critical protections to immigrants. With the Build Back Better package, we have the chance to invest in ways that fulfill our moral responsibility and to faithfully care for the most vulnerable.
The Senate is scheduled to go on recess soon. They should not leave until they’ve passed the Build Back Better bill. Join with us in asking your Senators to support these historic investments by passing the Build Back Better bill to fulfill their moral responsibility to the nation. Now is the time to address the roots of our country's injustices, and to honor the sacred call to recognize the dignity and worth of our neighbor and creation.
