Join together with hundreds of participants of Ecumenical Advocacy Days, happening this week virtually, as they call on Congress to take immediate and clear action on climate justice. Advocates for the United Church of Christ have a deep history of engagement in climate justice and creation care and joining this effort is a continuation of those endeavors.
Our faith and our love of creation compels us to call on Congress to act urgently on climate justice by reminding Congress that any legislation passed must include a lens of equity and justice. Simply acknowledging climate change without also acknowledging the disproportionate impact it has on marginalized communities misses the point and doesn’t get to the heart of the matter.
We are asking Congress to enact infrastructure and energy legislation that will promote climate, economic, gender, and racial justice to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. This includes a commitment to reaching net-zero climate pollution in the electricity sector by 2035 and economy-wide by 2050.
The United States has a responsibility to address climate change at home and around the world, as one of the main perpetrators of climate disruption and pollution. We are also asking that Congress work to provide funding for multilateral and bilateral environmental accounts for FY2022, including $2 billion for the Green Climate Fund, focusing on funding for the most impacted countries and communities, in many cases burdened by historic colonization and ongoing inequities.
