In recent months, we have seen international news coverage focus on what is happening in Gaza and Ukraine. While these crises are important to highlight and do need to be kept at the forefront of the news coverage, other conflicts in other parts of the world get less news coverage and are less well known. Our global partners are responding to various conflicts by meeting the needs of their communities in many ways including refugee response, emergency food and sanitation supplies, and cash assistance. Our partners are speaking, and we must listen. Read more here.

“…it’s important to reflect back on all we have accomplished this year as a community committed to creating our UCC vision of a Just World for All. Together we have mobilized and advocated on issues ranging from peace in the Middle East and Ukraine to protecting and expanding LGBTQ+ rights, from demanding common sense gun legislation to passing a just Farm Bill and federal budget, from defending voting rights to calling for reproductive justice for all, and much more! During the past year, UCC advocates have sent over 26,000 messages to legislators.
“As we look ahead to what will likely be a contentious election year, amidst continued tension and strife in the U.S. and around the world, our collective voice will be needed more than ever. We look forward to advocating alongside you in 2024, but for now, we wish you rest.”

JPANet: August Recess
From the Rev. Michael Neuroth, Director of the UCC Washington D.C. Office:
Recess was often the favorite part of my school day growing up. It was a break in the day - a time to relax, play kickball, connect with friends, and prepare for what was to come. Here on Capitol Hill, "recess" has a different connotation. “August Recess” is the time in which members of Congress head back to their states and districts to engage constituents in town hall meetings, state fairs, and other community events. It is a key time to engage with your members of Congress locally. For us in the UCC Washington D.C. office, August Recess also provides space to reflect on the past few months and plan for the work ahead.

“Each month we ask UCC advocates to help us unpack the complex justice issues that we’re working on. January started off with much drama here on Capitol Hill as we watched the historic vote (or should we say votes) for Speaker of the House. The best voice to help talk about this new Congress, and what we might expect this year, is UCC Domestic Policy Advocate, Katie Adams.”

Read MoreJPANet: Pass the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act
These limits have existed since 1989 and are not indexed to inflation. The result is millions trapped in poverty, unable to take steps to increase their income and savings without suffering a grossly disproportionate loss in essential services for basic living. As people of faith called to care for the most vulnerable, to love mercy, and to do justice, we must take action to fix what is unjust and call on Congress to pass the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act (S. 4102).
