Church Jottings 11/2/2020

Pastor Pamela at Taos UCC is asking members to sign up with the Poor People's Campaign to call or text low-income voters in key states prior to Election Day to encourage them to vote.

Andrew Ponder Williams, Campus Minister for UCC at ASU, preached at Scottsdale UCC last week.  Give him a call to have him visit your church!

Rev. Tom Martinez, Senior Minister at Desert Palm UCC, with help from IHELP Coordinator Sue Ringler, are putting together a Small Group Storytelling Project as part of his dissertation project through the Pacifica Graduate Institute (located in Carpinteria, CA). This degree program is based on Community, Liberation, Indigenous, and Eco-psychologies. One group of between 8 to 10 participants will be drawn from Desert Palm, and one group will consist of a combination of I-Help participants and members of Desert Palm UCC.

Before the kids went trick or treating, they were invited to a "drop-by" in the parking lot of United Church of Santa Fe for pictures and treats!

Rincon UCC is revisiting its designation as a Just Peace Church.  They earned this designation way back in 1986!  Their Faith Development group will get together, discuss and re-affirm their commitment to be Just Peace.  What does it mean to be a Just Peace Church?    Check out the Just Peace Church Handbook  if your church would like to explore this designation.

Due to Covid-19 and with so many churches holding their services online now, Cafe Justo’s coffee sales have dropped significantly from around 3000 pounds of coffee sold in a month (Pre-Covid) to currently about 1000 pounds a month and they are hurting.  The Good Shepherd UCC has supported this program for many years and would like to help Cafe Justo out by increasing their coffee orders.

If you are a coffee drinker and are not currently buying this coffee, this is one way you can help our friends in Mexico to keep their business going during these difficult times when so many businesses are failing. Also, if you have family, friends or neighbors whom you think would like to buy coffee from Cafe Justo and help the coffee growers, and your own church does not participate, they can order coffee through the program at The Good Shepherd.  Every pound of coffee purchased provides needed support to these families. The coffee makes very nice Christmas gifts too. You can’t beat the $10 price for a full pound of the best coffee you can buy!

The annual Turkey Trot is coming to Shadow Rock on Sunday, November 15th. The Desert Mission truck will be on campus to safely accept donations of turkeys, canned sides, or cash donations.

Church of the Good Shepherd in Albuquerque thanks everyone who helped with the COGS Socially Distant Highway Cleanup last week.  They picked up about 12 bags of trash, with lots of waves, shouts, and honks of gratitude from passing cyclists and cars.

Election Week Prayer Opportunities:

For past Presidential elections, the United Church of Santa Fe community has gathered for worship and prayer on Election Eve.  Since gathering in groups larger than 5 is not currently advisable, the sanctuary is open for private prayer all day Monday and Tuesday, and a recorded “Eve of the Election Service” of prayers, readings, and music will be sent midday Monday.

This year especially, it matters not so much how we do it but that we do it. In a word, PRAY for our country and state, for all who aspire to leadership, for peace to prevail and justice to be done. Most of all, pray that we might have the wisdom and courage we need for the living of our days and the facing of this hour.- Pastor Talitha
