Jottings 8/30/21

We all know we need to exercise more.  St Paul’s UCC in Rio Rancho invites folks to a non-competitive group that checks in every week and shares whether or not they went for a walk and how many times.  Then they share what they saw along the way.

If you live in Arizona, perhaps you’ve heard that there are efforts underway to delay and potentially stop six controversial bills from becoming law, all passed by the Arizona State Legislature this past session.  Six petitions are circulating, but time is short. In order to successfully refer each of six referendums to the 2022 ballot, giving voters the right to decide if Arizona enacts a 2.5 percent flat tax, implements the already voter-approved Prop 208, and blocks further voter restrictions in our state, circulators need to turn in 150,000 valid signatures for each petition by Sept. 28.  Petitions will be available to sign after worship at First Church or visit Shadow Rock UCC any Monday from 5-7 pm or any Saturday from 9-11 am.

Pastor Michael from Casas Adobes in Tucson had an Article published in the Sunday Arizona Daily Star.  It can be found at this link.

First Congregational UCC in Prescott was scheduled to welcome almost 20 new members this past weekend.  Welcome!  Sign them up for this newsletter as well as the church emails.

A community resource to consider, recommended by Shadow Rock UCC: The Scottsdale Baha'i Center hosts a weekly discussion group called Spirituality Cafe. The Center is re-opening in September, with in person gatherings planned soon. Spirituality Cafe participants meet on Saturday mornings 9:30 am to 11:00 am for open-minded and invigorating conversation... and you might see familiar Shadow Rock faces there! Begin your own explorations with an inquiry to Info@SpiritualityCafe.org

The Good Shepherd UCC in Sahuarita welcomes Deltrina Grimes as the new Director of Music for the Traditional Worship Service.  She is just getting settled in as a Doctoral Student in Choral Conducting at the University of Arizona School of Music.  For the past 10 years or more she has been a Professor of Music at Western Arizona College in Yuma, Arizona and she has also directed the Yuma Community Chorus.  One of her interests and the foci for her doctoral works is, “Working with Senior Voices.”

The Church of the Palms is stepping solidly into the future of being “the church” to those who cannot physically be present for classes, events or worship. Ten Hewlett Packard Chromebook computers have been purchased through a grant to enable anyone to participate who doesn’t have access to Internet or cellphone.  Now a church participant can borrow a pre-loaded Church of the Palms computer to use in their own home. It contains immediate access to the Church of the Palms website and there you find all the events, worship services, classes and much more in which one can choose to participate.  A church volunteer will be assigned to assist in learning the easy steps to be involved in real time classes or look at pre-recorded events, etc. You merely check the computer out...like you would from any library...and return it when you are finished.

Buckle up! On Saturday, Sept 18th from 7-8 PM, The Church of the Beatitudes is taking a drive through the vast musical landscape! Request favorite songs about cars, journeys, and destinations by sending an email to  sschermitzler@beatitudeschurch.org! We will gather both in-person in our Worship Center and online.  For those joining in-person, you will not be asked to sing along, and seating will be socially distanced with masks recommended. Song requests will be taken both online and at a microphone in the worship center. So get your requests ready! To watch a replay of last month's event, CLICK HERE
