Hear three Grandmothers talk about how integrative medicine started, how it has evolved, and hopes for the future.
Dr. McGarey has just reached the 102nd year mark and still going strong. She believes age is just a number and not a stop sign. She has just received her first literary contract and still has a 10-year plan! She was born in India to American Medical Missionaries. She was raised in the jungles of India where her parents provided medical care to the people there. She knew from the age of 2 that she was going to become a doctor. She has been a family physician for nearly seventy years. She is internationally known for her pioneering work in holistic medicine, natural birthing, and the physician-patient partnership. She was the co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and is known as the Mother of Holistic Medicine. She is author of 6 books with a 7th book scheduled for publication in May 2023.
Grandmother Mona is an educator and facilitator whose special interest in older people and youth and has led or participated in many effective initiatives related to Indigenous water issues and culturally appropriate health treatments for Native Americans. She is the founder and President/CEO of the Turtle Island Project, a non-profit program dedicated to promoting a vision of wellness and providing trans-cultural training to individuals, families, and healthcare professionals. Mona is also a founding member of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, which is an alliance of Indigenous women from around the world who are upholding, preserving, and protecting Indigenous practices and ceremonies, including the right to use the earth-based medicines.
Rev. Dr. Clarke is a physician and Protestant priest. She received her bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley, her medical degree at University of Minnesota (3rd best in Primary Care), and her Family Medicine fellowship at Dartmouth. She has served over 4 decades as an ordained Priest, 22 years as Medical Director of RedRoad Medicine, 21 years in private practice, 20 years with the United Nations, on faculty at two medical schools, and as a principal investigator in HIV, diabetes, and Traditional Native Medicine research. She is a Fellow AAFP, a founding diplomat of ABHIM and ABoIM, an NIH honoree “Changing the Face of Medicine” and a Didanawisgi (Native Healer) practicing integrative medicine of 1000 generations
