The movie Oppenheimer is big news these days. Unfortunately, they didn’t include the confirmation of African American scientists. Because of that:
First Congregational Albuquerque will highlight the lives of five of the nine Black scientists who participated in the Manhattan Project over the next several weeks. A photograph of one of the five scientists along with pertinent facts about their lives will be shown on screen during announcements and displayed on a bulletin board in Fellowship Hall.

Read MoreMy UCC church’s listening experiment with our evangelical neighbors
“I hoped our shared faith would provide enough common ground. I was a bit naive.
“As our last meeting of an inter-congregational experiment in dialogue was drawing to a close, I felt pleased. The atmosphere was warm and congenial. We’d talked about important subjects and about our most deeply held values in a way that seemed promising for further conversation. The experiment had been conceived as an exercise in listening between members of my very liberal congregation, First Congregational United Church of Christ in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and those of an evangelical congregation in the same town, and we had done just what we hoped.
“Then came the written evaluations and several private follow-up conversations. The experiment was not as rosy as I had perceived it.”
Read this Christian Century article about an experiment involving First Congregational United Church of Christ in Albuquerque.

Read MoreCarloads of school supplies from Sun Lakes UCC!
During the month of June, the Mission Ministry of Sun Lakes United Church of Christ, began a collection of school supplies for the Hartford Sylvia Encinas Elementary School in Chandler.
The school gave the church a list of items that were needed for both the teachers and the students. On Monday, July 10, Marge Harris and Pat Naive loaded up their cars with all the donations and dropped them off at the school. The staff of the school was overwhelmed by the number of items that they had and the generosity of our church. As you can see from the pictures, both cars were full of items that will be used this coming school year.
A special thank you also goes out to Connie Koehler and Marge for taking the money that was donated to go shopping, making sure that all the items that the school requested were included in their delivery.
